Sundance Coatings manufactures high-performance architectural stain sealers engineered for total durability on log homes, cedar siding, decks, and fences. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, we combine advanced wood chemistry with uncompromising quality standards to deliver predictable, full-proof wood protection to contractors and homeowners across the US.
Rambling Spirit. Kentucky Heritage.
Our story is shaped by Kentucky grit, Western outdoor living, and an authentic whiskey-making legacy. In the late 1800s, our great-grandfather JW McCulloch established the historic Green River Distillery, where craftsmanship was defined by strict recipes, exactness, and zero compromise. Today, that same frontier spirit drives Sundance Coatings. From signature tones like Bourbon Barrel Brown and Whiskey Falls Teak, we bring distillery-grade precision to modern wood science—ensuring every finish delivers reliable, long-lasting performance.
The Science Behind Sundance Coatings
When contractors, architects, and chemists ask what makes Sundance Coatings different, it comes down to a fundamental shift in how we handle mold prevention and wood physics.
Starving Mold at the Molecular Level
Most traditional stains rely on vegetable-based oils like linseed or tung oil. From a chemistry standpoint, those oils are packed with natural proteins and sugars—essentially a feast for black mold and mildew. Competitors attempt to fix this by dumping heavy biocide packages into the mix, but once those surface biocides inevitably wash away, the mold takes over.
We took a completely different path. Our proprietary isophthalic long-oil alkyd resin is modified to be entirely bio-inert. We’ve stripped out the raw plant lipids at the molecular level, creating a synthetic polymer backbone that offers zero nutritional value to fungi. We don’t just fight mold; we starve it.
Penetration Over Rigid Surface Films
Furthermore, traditional film-forming chemistry is inherently flawed. Competitors rely on toxic, high-VOC volatile solvents that evaporate into thin air, polluting the atmosphere and leaving behind a brittle, peel-prone surface layer. We take the opposite path: by formulating at an ultra-high solids ratio, up to 95% of what you buy stays in your wood—90% solids for DECK1 COAT® and 95% for LOG1 COAT®.
Carried by a refined, non-drying mineral oil, our resin floods the interior cell walls of the wood. It stabilizes and bulks the lignin from within rather than trapping moisture under a rigid, failing surface film.
The Sundance Standard
The result is a wood finish that stays flexible, is physically incapable of peeling, and eliminates the biological food source that ruins traditional stains. It is an ultra-low VOC system designed for people who want authentic, long-lasting wood beauty without the endless cycle of stripping and sanding.
