Deck Staining “Top 10” List

By Mark McCulloch

Not all stain sealers are of the same type. Know the differences and what’s on there before you get started. At least write down what you are going to put on this time so you know the answer to this question next time.

Know the differences between oil based vs. acrylic semi transparent, semi-solid, and solid wood stain sealers.

You can never over prep, but you certainly can under Prep!

Assume you’re not gonna get all of the old stain finish off and buy stain sealer that is similar to the old and compatible. You can’t put an oil base on top of an acrylic. However you can put acrylic over an oil based as long as it’s properly cleaned.

If a new deck, always buy an oil based sealer first and reserve going by way of the solid for later years when you’ve screwed up the oil based so many times it’s beyond looking good (unless you’ve used Sundance’s DECK*1 COAT).

The solid will hide the mess and give a uniform finish. But be aware your deck now will look painted and will run the risk of now flaking if not maintained.

When choosing an oil based stain make sure it doesn’t have linseed oil in it! (Sundance’s doesn’t)

That allows long-term maintenance to go easy by not needing to sand it off and just a power-wash required next time to re-apply.

Linseed oil will harden on the surface, is organic, and fuels the growth of black mold forming from within and the #1 reason you’ll be considering a solid down the road if applied.

Remember it’s not just what you’re applying on the deck that will determine your success… it’s what you’re avoiding getting on other areas other than your deck!

Cover underneath the deck with plastic sheeting or tarps and if spraying put sheets over plant life near the deck. (plastic will cause plants to wilt and burn under the sun).

Always roll slowly near your walls or you will leave splatter marks.

Never apply more than one coat if it’s oil based. Two coats if an acrylic solid. Always back-roll.

Always stain the railing verticals 1st and horizontal – floors last

Know what tools and supplies you need. Google it you’ll find plenty out there at any paint supply stores or Lowe’s & Home Depot. Always have more than enough than not enough… that goes for everything! You can always take it back but not having it when you need it is worse!

Don’t apply products before an incoming rain. Check not only the weather forecast, but Doppler radar hours before you start. Weather forecasts are usually wrong…verify present and short term incoming weather via radar. Don’t hang your hat on a weather report from your local station the day before or you will get burned!

Read directions on label and Product Data Sheet twice.

If the previous 9 are too difficult for you to consider…
